Local Veterans Day events set for today

A number of events will be held today marking Veterans Day across Portage County. The following is a listing of events provided to Stevens Point Journal Media:

? Portage County will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. in the Pineries Room at the Portage County Public Library, 1101 Main St.

John Pionowski, commander of the John Paul II Post No. 185 of the Polish Legion of American Veterans, will be the master of ceremonies for the event. Retired Col. Mike McKenna and LTC Gary Thompson are the scheduled speakers.

Veterans groups scheduled to participate in the event include Stevens Point American Legion Post No. 6, John Paul II Polish Legion of American Veterans Post No. 185, Vietnam Veterans of America No. 115, AMVETS Post No. 1051, and the Central Wisconsin Detachment of the Marine Corps League. The Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 30 will be providing honors. Members of the post and chapter auxiliaries will be present, as well.

? The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at noon in the Alumni Room of the Dreyfus University Center, 1015 Reserve St., on campus.

The university's ROTC color guard will present the colors, followed by Al Thompson, vice chancellor of student affairs, who will welcome guests. Chancellor Bernie Patterson will share a message by video, and the ceremony will conclude with the sounding of taps.

Several meal specials will be offered on campus for veterans and their families, sponsored by the Basement Brewhaus, University Dining and the Diversity and College Access office.

? Central Wisconsin Sons of Norway lodges will sponsor a talk Tuesday by Irene Levin Berman, the author of a book about Norweigan Jews and their struggles during World War II. Her talk is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at Woodlands Church, 190 Hoover Ave., Plover.

? Pacelli High School, 1301 Maria Drive, will hold a Veterans Day prayer service during its community meeting time from 9:05 a.m. to 9:35 a.m. All veterans will be honored, and those with a Pacelli or Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools connection will get special recognition. Veterans are asked to call 715-341-2442 or email Vicki Okray Peskie at vokray-peskie@spacs.k12.wi.us if you plan to attend so seating can be arranged.

? Harmony Assisted Living, 1800 Bluebell Lane in Stevens Point, will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 1:30 p.m.

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point ROTC color guard and the Pacelli Choir are scheduled to attend. Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson and Portage County Executive Patty Dreier are among a number of scheduled speakers. Complimentary refreshments will be served immediately after event.

? Emeritus at Oakridge, 5625 Sandpiper Drive in Stevens Point, will hold a Veterans Day service at 2 p.m. in the dining room. A prayer, presentation of honor guard, and a pinning ceremony are all scheduled. Refreshments and music will follow the service.
