MARSHFIELD — Janice Moen has a membership to a gym, but that’s not where she gets her exercise.
“I’ve been there once,” the 57-year-old Marshfield woman admits. “I don’t like going to the gym.
“I love dancing,” she said with the emphasis on “love.”
Moen started dancing a couple of years ago, and now enjoys the physical and mental fitness benefits.
“I don’t like crossword puzzles and I hate Sudoku,” Moen said. “I had to brighten my mind, so I got into line dancing, because you have to memorize all those moves.”
In addition to the line dancing, Moen recently began taking ballroom dance lessons.
“That is not as much exercise as line dancing is, but it’s still exercise,” she said.
Angela Fink of Marshfield agreed. She has been line dancing for eight years. She got involved to spend time with her parents who were line dancers.
“And it just turned into an exercise thing,” she said.
“Dancing is great exercise, not only for the body, but also for the brain,” Fink said. “Dancing is an opportunity for socializing and meeting new people when dancing in different locations.”
“We go out dancing every weekend, then one night a week we go to a class,” she said.
“For a weekend out, we can dance for four hours straight and still feel fine; we can still breathe,” Fink said with a laugh.
Fink, a contractor, has noticed better flexibility while she works because of the dancing, she said.
“I was able to move a little bit better,” she said.
Dance events and lessons are available throughout central Wisconsin, from ballet to ballroom and every genre in-between.
The benefits have no age barrier, Moen said.
“On Tuesday nights, if I go to Wausau (to dance), I’m the youngest person there,” she said.
“It’s a good workout. It’s a fun way to exercise,” Moen said. “I come home sometimes sweating like a pig.”
