The Green Bay Packers signed running back Orwin Smith to the practice squad on Wednesday after losing running back Michael Hill to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 53-man roster.
Smith, a rookie out of Georgia Tech, is 6-foot, 209-pounds. In 51 college games, he rushed for 1,839 yards and 20 touchdowns on 198 carries (a 9.3-yard average).
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Smith had surgery following his final season at Georgia Tech to repair recurrent shoulder dislocations.
Smith will wear No. 34 for the Packers.
Hill was in his second stint on the Packers' practice squad. He was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 2, then signed to the 53-man roster on Sept. 30. He played in two games, against Detroit and Baltimore, then was released on Oct. 18. He was re-signed to the practice squad four days later.
The Buccaneers signed Hill after losing running back Mike James for the season with a broken ankle.
