Paine's 'Nutcracker' opens Nov. 22

The seventh presentation of "Nutcracker in the Castle" begins this Friday at the Paine Art Center and Gardens. Nutcracker in the Castle is an original annual production that presents the traditional Nutcracker fairy tale amidst the historic rooms elaborately decorated as the fantastic scenes of the beloved holiday fairy tale, presented Nov. 22 through Jan. 6.

The traditional Nutcracker story is presented within the historic estate's ornate interiors. This original presentation of the holiday fairy tale immerses audiences from the opening Party Scene with a giant Christmas tree to the magical Land of Sweets and the enchanting Palace of the Sugar Plum Fairy, the tale unfolds throughout the rooms with a mesmerizing array of sights and sounds.

Available by reservation, Guided Tours are led by a character actor, include live music performed by Elmwood String Quartet and youth ballet performances by Valley Academy for the Arts. Candlelight Tours are another especially spellbinding way for people of all ages to view the Nutcracker display. On special evenings, visitors carry flickering electric candles as they wander through darkened rooms of the mansion illuminated by the glow of more than 70 Christmas trees.

New this year is the Sugar Plum Fairy's Cupcake Factory. The Paine's conservatory is transformed into a fantasy café serving Tamara's the Cake Guru's delicious cupcakes and yummy hot chocolate, with a special hostess, the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Self-Guided Tours are available Mondays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Candlelight Tours are available Nov 27 through Jan 3; Wednesdays and Fridays, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guided Tours are available by reservation, Saturday evenings 5 to 8 pm and Sundays noon to 3:30 p.m. Reservations can be made by calling (920) 235-6903 or at www.thepaine.org.
