Wood County authorities have found a Sheriff's Department-issued assault rifle that went missing Thursday afternoon in rural Vesper.

An individual who found the AR15 rifle earlier in the day returned it to authorities, according to a Sheriff's Department news release sent out shortly after 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

At about 3 p.m. Thursday, a deputy was putting the unloaded AR15 rifle into his vehicle and inadvertently left it on the truck and drove away, Lt. Shawn Becker said previously. Authorities thought the weapon was somewhere along Highways 186, HH or F in Hansen, Sigel or Vesper.
