While lowering the cellular shade to the windowsill in my bathroom the other morning, the multicolored ceramic butterfly that had been sitting there for years fell to the ground and shattered.

I stood still for a moment as I contemplated the pieces at my feet, wondering if they could be glued back together. But as I lowered myself to my knees and lifted the pieces into my hands, I saw that some of them had become tiny shards of orange, red, pink and purple.
