7 Packers players sit out practice

The Green Bay Packers' injury list included seven players that didn't practice on Wednesday at Clarke Hinkle Field.

They were quarterback Aaron Rodgers, cornerback Sam Shields, offensive lineman Don Barclay, linebacker Nick Perry, defensive lineman Johnny Jolly, cornerback James Nixon and cornerback Casey Hayward.

One positive note is that offensive lineman J.C. Tretter, who broke an ankle during OTAs, made his first appearance on the practice field this season. Tretter, a fourth-round draft pick, is on the Packers' PUP list, and the team is expected to place him on the season-ending injured reserve

Shields was a surprise scratch in Sunday's game because of a hamstring injury, even though he was listed as probable heading into the game. His absence today could be an indication the injury is more serious.

Barclay missed Sunday's game with an knee injury and his inability to practice could mean the Packers rely on Marshall Newhouse again at right tackle, or attempt to play Derek Sherrod for the first time since December 2011.

Jolly went out of Sunday's game against the Giants with a groin injury. Perry continues to battle a foot injury, Nixon injured his knee on Sunday, and Hayward has been struggling with a hamstring injury since July.

Rodgers, dressed in sweats and a stocking cap, was with quarterbacks Scott Tolzien and Matt Flynn during practice, mostly observing with his hands in his pockets. He occasionally broke out of observation mode -- he threw a short pass and took on the role of a running back on a play action "handoff."

It was cold and windy at practice. Temperatures were hovering around the 40-degree mark.
