Peter McMahon, chief operating officer of Canadian food chain Loblaws, was named CEO of Shopko, the company said Monday.

McMahon has 30 years' retail experience. Before joining Loblaws, he worked for several large retailers, including Walmart in Germany and Japan and Tesco in Europe.

He succeeds former CEO, President and Chairman W. Paul Jones, who left Shopko in 2012 to pursue another job opportunity. Mike Bettiga, COO, was interim CEO. Jill Soltau was promoted to president and chief merchandising officer in January.

"His extensive supply chain experience will be a tremendous asset as Shopko continues to grow its Shopko Hometown store format, which serves smaller, rural markets," said T. Scott King, senior managing director for Sun Capital Partners Inc., a private equity firm based in Florida. Sun Capital owns Shopko.

Shopko, headquartered in Ashwaubenon, operates nearly 335 stores in 22 states, including 134 Shopko stores, 180 Shopko Hometown stores, 16 Shopko Pharmacy stores and five Shopko Express Rx stores. It reported sales of $3 billion.
