Immigration reform will help economy grow

EDITOR: It's time for immigration reform that allow millions of immigrants a chance to come forward and pay any fines and get in line for citizenship. Why? It will help with security as we invest in protecting our borders. It will improve our economy which also strengths our security. The immigrants will turn our aging workforce into a much younger, more eager workforce. And it is the humane thing to do, a point that was made clear this summer at a public forum at the UW Center for Civic Engagement.

The "Bibles, Badges and Business" forum included business leaders, the executive director of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, Marathon County Sheriff Scott Parks, representatives from the dairy industry, restaurant industry, the League of United Latin American Citizens and the University of Wisconsin, who talked about students and technical advances. All the panelists agreed we need a comprehensive immigration reform that allows undocumented immigrants to pay fines and then get in line for citizenship.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and many business leaders are supportive of this idea. We simply cannot afford to deport millions of able workers who want to work and have the drive that immigrants have always brought to America. We cannot continue to educate students and train college students and then drive them out of the country to work against us in the world economy.

Out of the shadows and into the workforce to strengthen America, a nation of immigrants, for the 21st century.
