The Packers announced they’ve cut safety Jerron McMillian to make room on their roster for running back Kahlil Bell.

McMillian, 24, started two the first two games this season in place of the injured Morgan Burnett. He played in 28 games with the Packers. He had one interception and one fumble recovery during his rookie season and none this season.

McMillian was a fourth-round draft pick from 2012. He went into training camp as a possible starter at safety but lost the job to M.D. Jennings, and then early in the season lost of the coaching staff’s trust because of multiple coverage errors.

McMillian is the highest drafted player from the ’12 class that the Packers have cut so far. They previously released linebacker Terrell Manning, tackle Andrew Datko and quarterback B.J. Coleman. Three of the Packers' four remaining safeties went undrafted: Jennings, Chris Banjo and Sean Richardson.

Bell is a 5-11, 216-pound fifth-year halfback out of UCLA. His signing was prompted by rookie running back Johnathan Franklin being placed on injured reserve last week after sustaining a concussion and neck injury.

Bell has played in 27 games with three starts during his NFL career with the Chicago Bears (2009-12) and the N.Y. Jets (2012). He has rushed for 633 yards on 148 carries (4.3-yard average) and has 22 receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown.

Bell entered the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009 as an undrafted free agent. He will wear No. 22 for the Packers.

The Packers also signed cornerback Antonio Dennard to the practice squad. Dennard, 5-11, 189, is a rookie out of Langston (Okla.) University. He signed with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent last season and split time between the practice squad and injured reserve. Dennard will wear No. 35 for the Packers.
