Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, out since Nov. 4 with a broken left collarbone, will be evaluated Wednesday morning, coach Mike McCarthy said Monday. Even so, the Packers are planning for Matt Flynn to start Sunday in Dallas.
McCarthy spoke to the media on the day after a 22-21 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Here are some highlights:
♦ Aaron Rodgers, he’ll work out tomorrow. He’ll be evaluated Wednesday morning by (team physician Dr.) Pat McKenzie. They’re going to do more than last week.
♦ (Running back) Eddie Lacy has a sprained ankle.
♦ Rodgers is progressing. The biggest thing is strength and comfort. He felt better on Friday than Wednesday. He made some progress last week.
♦ (I like defensive tackle) Johnny Jolly’s passion and attitude. He has that personality that people are attracted to. He has a lot of natural leadership ability. Definitely brings an edge.
♦ I thought defensive film graded out very well. Played well in the second half. It was great to finish the game in the way we did. In offense, we felt we had an opportunity in our 4-minute offense to close the game out and he didn’t. Grades were very good.
♦ (On why cornerbacks Micah Hyde and Jarrett Bush saw more action in dime defense.) Game-planning, opportunities, and performance. Hyde and Bush earned those opportunities.
♦ Game plan (on offense) was to go no-huddle and see how they react to it and what they’re calling against us. Rhythm throws were definitely part of it, but emphasis was running the football. We wanted to have more production than we had running the ball. (Flynn) hit the shot play when he had the opportunity to (receiver) Jordy (Nelson). Completion percentage was 75 percent with three drops. (Flynn) played very well.
♦ I think every quarterback has a different preference as far as throws and what we do out of shotgun formations. Game-planning controls that. You try to cater it to the individual.
♦ (Injured receiver) Randall Cobb, I saw him earlier. He’ll go again tomorrow but he still hasn’t been medically cleared.
♦ We’re planning (for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys) today and tomorrow, We’re planning to play the game with Matt. Visited with Aaron yesterday about where he is. He has hurdles to get over. We’re planning for Matt Flynn.
♦ 12 sacks (allowed) in two weeks aren’t good. There’s plenty of there for everybody. The game up in Detroit I’d like to think was an anomaly. I thought pass protection was pretty good against Atlanta. Timing is definitely a part of it.
♦ I thought Mason Crosby actually kicked the ball well for the weather and Tim Masthay was good with the directional punting. I thought our special teams graded out very good, which was great for the overall performance.
♦ Eddie Lacy played great. I thought run-blocking, we weren’t at our best. I thought he ran hard and played very well.
♦ There’s a reason why you run the ball at the end of a half. I don’t call plays as far as getting everybody hurt.
♦ (Linebacker) Jamari Lattimore’s evaluation on knee (injury) is still going on. They haven’t given me a report yet, but they feel pretty good about (linebacker) Brad Jones.
♦ There has to be medical clearance for Aaron Rodgers. When player is in a rehab position, there’s conversation. That meeting goes on and ultimately Pat McKenzie has to clear the player.
♦ I thought (safety) Sean Richardson played well. Thought he played well on special teams. Sean brings an energy, attitude, juice. He may get some more opportunities this week.
