Fall 50 awarded road championships

USA Track & Field has awarded the 2014 and 2015 50-Mile Road Championships to the Door County Fall 50.

The Fall 50 is a 50-mile road race from Gills Rock to Sturgeon Bay that's held annually in late October. Participants can compete as individual runners or as members of two- to five-person relay teams.

The Fall 50 was awarded the championships over the Tussey Mountainback Relay in Pennsylvania, which has hosted the event the past six years. A prize purse of $12,000 will be split among the top five male and female finishers in the open and masters divisions.

"We're honored to be selected for this event," said Sean Ryan, who started the Fall 50 in 2006. "It's a testimony to the hard work put forth by the staff and volunteers of this race that we were chosen. We look forward to putting on a great event and elevating the profile of Door County nationally in the running community."

The Fall 50 has grown from 22 solo runners and 35 relay teams in 2006 to more than 130 solo runners and 400 teams in 2013. During those eight years, the event has donated approximately $60,000 to six Door County charities.
