If Mike Pettine gets the Cleveland Browns head coaching position, he reportedly would be interested in hiring Alex Van Pelt as his offensive coordinator, according to report by Jason La Canfora of CBSsports.com.

However, Van Pelt has a year left on his contract as an assistant coach with the Packers, so coach Mike McCarthy can block him from leaving. NFL rules mandate that teams allow an assistant coach who’s under contract to leave only if it’s to become a head coach.

McCarthy very well might block such a move after losing quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, who last week was hired as the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator. Van Pelt, who currently is the Packers' running backs coach, appears to be the leading candidate to replace McAdoo as quarterbacks coach. McCarthy might feel as though he can’t lose a second coach after losing McAdoo at that crucial position.

Pettine, who is Buffalo’s defensive coordinator, had a second interview with the Browns this week and reportedly has an excellent shot at the job. However, the Browns have scheduled interviews with Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and reportedly want a second interview with Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
