It might be a short month, but February is jam packed with activities in the Spencer area. You can find soups, chili, song and even some snow-centered fun.
Things start hopping this weekend. The Swamp Stompers Snowmobile Club is sponsoring its annual Snowmobile Show and Jalopy Ride on Saturday. Registration is open for all sleds that are 1984 or older. Registration is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a $5 fee per sled with a $20 maximum for multiple entrees. The jalopy ride starts at 2 p.m., followed by refreshments and trophy announcements.
On Sunday, the Spencer High School Music Department will present its 36th annual Cabaret. Performances of famous movie songs will be presented by soloists, bands, choirs and hand bells. Admission is free. If you are hungry, you'll want to attend the "Souper Bowl" Luncheon starting at 10:30 a.m. and running up until 12:30 p.m. Proceeds from the lunch go toward helping Spencer High School music students. Then it's time to head to the LuCille Tack Center for the Arts and get ready to watch two hours of entertainment. You can be witness to the many talents our young adults are putting on display.
With the first February weekend in the books, we turn our sights to the following two weekends. If you are a taste connoisseur of chili, then you should read very carefully. On Feb. 8, Trinity Lutheran Church is sponsoring a chili supper at the church, 109 W. Clark St. Two kinds of chili will be served from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Cheese and crackers, buns and cornbread, desserts and beverages will complement the chili. Admission is free, but there will be a freewill offering. All proceeds will go to the Spencer Kids Group. Funds will be matched through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
If you can't make this chili supper, you still have a second chance to satisfy those taste buds. On Feb. 15, the Spencer Swamp Stompers will hold the annual chili feed, which is in conjunction with its poker run. They will be serving chili from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a small monetary cost to enjoy some good-tasting chili. The event is held at the clubhouse in the Spencer Industrial Park.
If chili isn't your cup of tea, how about roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over an open fire surrounded by snow? On Feb. 15, snowshoeing fun can be enjoyed at the Spencer School Forest from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Come out and snowshoe or walk the beautiful trails in the forest. Snowshoes will be provided if you do not have a pair. Hot chocolate and cookies will be waiting for you when you emerge from the trails. The Spencer School Ecology Club will have a craft-making workshop in the education center.
