Because it was a hymn in the Anglican church, most of us of "papist religion" upbringing (Catholic) never heard of it until folk singer Judy Collins' version received radio airplay in 1970.

Upon reflection, that period - 1970 to '75 - was probably the last time the influence of religion could be felt to any extent in popular secular music. ...
