The Green Bay Packers have hired new assistant coaches for running backs and special teams.

At running backs, they hired Sam Gash, the former NFL fullback who spent five years on the Detroit Lions coaching staff.

At assistant special teams coach, they hired Ron Zook, the former University of Florida and University of Illinois coach.

Gash, 44, had a 12-year NFL career as a fullback with New England, Buffalo and Baltimore. He played in two Pro Bowls.

He’s been an NFL assistant coach since 2005. In 2005 and 2006, he was an assistant special teams and assistant running back coach with the New York Jets, and he’d been with the Lions since 2007, first serving as an assistant special teams coach for one year, then the last five as the Lions’ running backs coach. He was fired after the 2012 season.

Gash replaces Alex Van Pelt, who has moved to quarterbacks coach after Ben McAdoo was hired as the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator last month.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy has coached previously with Zook, who was out of coaching the past two seasons after getting fired by Illinois after the 2011 season. They were assistant coaches together with the New Orleans Saints in 2000 and 2001; McCarthy was offensive coordinator and Zook defensive coordinator.

Zook, 59, also has coached in the NFL as special teams coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1996-98) and defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs (1999). As the head coach at Florida from 2002 to 2004, he had a 23-14 record, and at Illinois from 2005 to 2011, he was 34-51.

He replaces Chad Morton, who was fired recently.

McCarthy still has one vacancy on his staff. He needs to hire an outside linebackers coach to replace Kevin Greene, who resigned last month.
