By this time of year, my New Year's resolutions usually would be nothing more than road-kill along the superhighway of life.
I've tried to let Will Power grab the wheel and guide me onto roads of better habits. With white knuckles holding the wheel, Will starts out strong, but before long becomes distracted, starts plowing down resolutions like a demolition-derby driver.
This year I decided to pick a word for the year. One simple word. Many words applied for the privilege. They stood in line and shouted, "Pick me, pick me." Off in corner, the word "Savor" winked at me and I knew we'd be friends for the year of 2014.
Savor is teaching me to pay attention to the world around me. It follows me to the grocery store where we delight in the bouquet of colors, textures and smells of the produce section.
Oh, the goods times we have in the kitchen. With music playing in the background, hips swaying to the beat of chopping veggies and steam rising from the soup pot, new creations take place every day.
Plates become blank canvases waiting for grilled salmon to nestle in the upturned palm of a kale leaf. The smile of a lemon slice, the tango of bright-colored peppers and a mound of mashed cauliflower sprinkled with curry complete the picture of healthy foods. Add a salad bowl brimming with a variety of greens and purple dotted with red cherry tomatoes, black olives and chopped boiled egg for contrast and the meal becomes a banquet of pleasure. Add fresh water served in a cut-glass goblet to capture and reflect a rainbow of colors and dinner is served.
Yes, Savor and I are having a wonderful, healthier year and we wish the same for you.
