If the NFL increases the number of playoff qualifiers from 12 to 14, one benefit could be a reduction in preseason games, according to Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy.

"Maybe we reduce the number of preseason games and the trade-off is you have two additional playoff games," said Murphy, who serves on the NFL's powerful competition committee, which proposes rule changes.

The expansion of the playoff field in each conference from six teams to seven, with the No. 1 seeds in the NFC and AFC receiving first-round byes, will be a topic of discussion next month at the NFL owners ...
