Rothschild broke meetings law in fire chief hire

The village violated the state's Open Meetings Act twice this fall when it hired a fire chief without giving notice, then shut the public out of a discussion about personnel issues without legal justification to do so.

The Police and Fire Commission on Sept. 10 went into closed session to interview candidates for the village's first full-time fire chief - a legally sound reason. However, the commission then convened in open session and voted to hire former town of Rib Mountain part-time firefighter Marc Hill, 34, as the fire chief, which was not on the agenda.
