Bulaga might be going back to right tackle

INDIANAPOLIS — Though the Packers haven’t declared where they’ll play Bryan Bulaga when he returns from knee reconstruction surgery this spring or summer, coach Mike McCarthy hinted that they’re leaning strongly toward moving Bulaga back to right tackle.

He had moved from right to left tackle last season before he injured his knee, but rookie David Bakhtiari played well enough to suggest he could be the Packers’ left tackle for the long term.

McCarthy said Bakhtiari won’t be moved, so the decision is where to play Bulaga and 2011 first-round pick Derek Sherrod, who came back late last season from the broken lower leg that sidelined him for nearly two years.

McCarthy said his coaches still are re-grading players — they conducted the same exercise immediately after the season — and that they’ve gotten through all the video cut-ups of the run game.

He wants to wait until they’ve finished the pass-protection cut-ups before deciding which linemen will play where. But it appears the most likely outcome is Bulaga moving back to right tackle, and Sherrod competing either with him at that position or Bakhtiari at left tackle for the starting job.

“Very well could be,” McCarthy said. “We haven’t had a final decision on that, but that’s logical thinking.”
