An Internet giant's $40 million investment in Renaissance Learning Inc. signifies a growing interest nationwide in the educational technology industry, venture capital experts say.

By investing in the Wisconsin Rapids-based company, which offers student assessment and other learning tools, including its flagship product Accelerated Reader, Google Capital is showing it is confident in the future of the industry, said Dan Olszewski, director of the Weinert Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
