Editor's note: This column has been updated to include the two Best Picture nominees we saw after this was first posted online.

In a number of ways, the nominations for this year's 86th annual Academy Awards, which were handed out Sunday, show that 2013 was a very good year for movies.

The Best Picture candidates - nine this time - cover a healthy range of drama, commentary, history, comedy, storytelling, art and technique. We've seen seven of the nominees so far, and none has much at all in common with the others; they're seven very different films, which we think is a good thing. ...
