Police: Piecemeal bans unfair to drivers; Waupaca County's 2008 cellphone rule hasn't been enforced

Fox Cities policymakers have yet to dial up any ordinance that would ban drivers from using handheld cellphones, as Wausau officials did earlier this month.

Wausau joined Marshfield, Waupaca County and Wisconsin Rapids as governments that ban the practice. Green Bay officials discussed the issue last week but took no action.

In the Fox Cities, police acknowledge cellphone use distracts drivers and contributes to crashes, but they think individual bans that vary from community to community would create confusion for drivers. ...
