Only to weapons?

Gov. Walker turned down the money for the high speed train, saying that it might cost the state money later. Now politicians are falling all over themselves over the proposed cut to the littoral combat ship order in Marinette. They say it means jobs! It means jobs only while the ship is under construction. After that it is all expense with no revenue.

Meanwhile the train could have been serving a useful peacetime purpose generating commerce, which then creates jobs for its entire useful life. I guess that only applies to weapons. Or does it?

Too much increase?

According to the Feb. 12 HTR, the cities human resource generalist, Jeri Johnson, should get a raise from $25.97 per hour to $40.34 per hour, according to a Madison consulting firm. Council members Chris Able and Jill Hennessey seem to agree with the wage increase. All three are strangers to me, although I figure they are honorable, hard working, city employees and council members.

The country is split on raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. Yet, the city wants to raise someone's pay by $14.37 per hour. Ironic, isn't it, that her pay increase is four times the minimum wage increase.

I understand job descriptions and pay scales, just trying to grasp the idea of raising someone's pay that much. What did we pay the consulting firm? What are her benefits?

Believe it or not, the price of gas went up again. It was my understanding that we had someone on the payroll whose job it was to monitor gouging. Maybe their five years are up and they declared free agency.

At times like this when I feel trapped and violated, I like to think about the man that I consider to be the best talk show host of all time, Johnny Carson. When Johnny felt under the weather or distressed, he would pay a visit to his physician - Doctor "Ben Dover"!

Art worth seeing

Last Sunday Deanna and I visited the school art exhibit at the Rahr-West Art Museum. There were hundreds of exhibits from every grade level through high school, and in every medium imaginable. I urge everyone to go see it and be prepared to spend several hours taking in the sights.

Were there any Rembrandts, Michelangelos or Norman Rockwells? No, not yet, but every artisan got his start somewhere and sometime. I'm sure that each child is proud to show off his product to his parents. Kudos to the staff of the Rahr-West for organizing and displaying all these works of art.
