In the days before the creation of the three Kewaunee County school districts, each of the 10 towns had five or more one-room schoolhouses. At this time the Kewaunee County Historical Society has records of 54 old one-room schools.

Richard L. Dorner, Historical Society coordinator, said the schools were built on donated property.

"Property owners donated the land as a service to the children, and when they closed, the land was given back to the original owners," Dorner said. ...
