Slow meltdown

Spring is here one day and gone the next, but this is a good thing. If it gets too warm too fast, it causes a lot of problems, not the least of which is flooding. The time will come soon enough when we are complaining about the heat. Don't forget that the time is fast approaching when we'll be watering the flowers in the cemeteries. Save your gallon milk jugs, please.

Last year there were more water bottles available than I can ever remember in the past. Keep up the good work. And when driving in inclement weather, turn on your headlights to see and be seen more clearly. Thanks.

Open for business?

So Manitowoc Ice is headed to Mexico! Company Vice President Tom Musial says it will allow better service to its customers in Texas. I guess they don't have any customers in New York or New Port Richey, Fla., where they keep their corporate post office box.

And here I thought Wisconsin was open for business! Maybe Gov. Walker didn't count on conservative devotion to free trade. How's he doing on those 250,000 jobs? I understand a few jobs were created to take down that building on Washington Street. Just be happy you can now get a deal on that ice machine you always wanted. Such is life in the Libertarian paradise.

Hope remains

The question is asked by Helen Goswitz, "how do we save our Constitution, our freedom and our country?" in a letter to the editor on March 11. This may give hope to the millions of patriotic Americans who may be asking that same question.

Without any shadow of a doubt, America and her freedoms are imperiled. Just as surely, there is an existence today, as there has always existed, layer upon layer of strength - institutional, legal and cultural - that continues to insulate America from the best-laid plans of her enemies, foreign and domestic, and provide a foundation upon which our republic will one day be renewed.

No help for vets

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont introduced a bill to help our veterans. The Veterans Benefit Bill would expand health care and education, restore cost-of-living increases, reproductive services and expanded caregiver compensation. The bill was defeated, 56-41, with only two Republicans voting for the bill. Both parties get us into wars but Republicans refuse to vote for a bill to help our veterans.

American Legion National Commander Daniel M. Dellinger said: "There was a right way to vote and a wrong way to vote today ... I don't know how anyone who voted 'no' today can look a veteran in the eye and justify that vote."

Did you know that 25 percent of the homeless in America are veterans?

Biden the best?

The Democrats do have another presidential candidate. Vice President Joe Biden has proclaimed that he can't think of a reason why he should not run. For the good of our republic, here are some reasons why he shouldn't run: (1) He's the perpetual gaffer. Jay Leno made as many jokes about Biden's verbal blunders as he did about Dan Quayle. (2) As we saw in the Biden-Ryan VP debates, he is a pompous, rude, condescending blowhard; and (3) As we learned from Robert Gates (the former Obama secretary of defense) Biden was almost always on the wrong side of every issue.

As with Hillary, is Biden the best the Democrats can do?
