Kaitlyn Backhaus is willing to pay a premium for bacon from a pig farmer she has met face-to-face.

"I feel I'm giving back to the community ... and I'm a pretty healthy person," Backhaus, a Green Bay resident, said after paying Golden Bear Farms' Steve Deibele about $10 for a pound of the meat harvested from grass-fed pork.

The consumer and the farmer were among more than 100 people attending the recent "Meet Your Local Food Producer" event at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers Y sponsored by Healthiest Manitowoc County. ...
