Church Mutual Insurance Co. was praised on the occasion of its 75th anniversary -- 42 years ago.
Each Monday, we turn to a day in the newspaper's history for a look at what the Editorial Board found worthy of comment. We will preserve the punctuation and capitalization of the original editorial column. Here is what we wrote on March 17, 1972:
An asset to Merrill
Now observing its 75th anniversary, Church Mutual Insurance Co. has for some years demonstrated its expertise in church and institutional insurance and its leadership in the industry with solid administration, financial structure and growth.
To the community, it is a "clean industry" with significant employment. But far more than that, Church Mutual, its management and its employes (sic.) have all made a devoted effort to take an active role in furthering the Merrill community.
Church Mutual has been a pace-setter with contributions such as the fire department's rescue squad and more recently, the snowmobile, rescue sled and hauling trailer given the sheriff's department. Other gifts will be made during the company's diamond anniversary year.
Individually, Church Mutual management personnel have for years given of their administrative talents in such activites as service on the county board, park and recreation board, library board, board of education and county home and hospital board.
Members of the Church Mutual family are also active in their churches and an endless list of community organizations ranging from the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce to the Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, Jaycee and Golf clubs.
Merrill owes this firm a debt of gratitude for caring about and actively helping its home community to continue on the move. We join with a grateful populace in offering our thanks to Church Mutual and its growing family of employes and in offering best wishes for continued growth and success in the insurance industry.
