Americans are mistaken, ill-informed and, to some degree, deceived. We're also increasingly open-minded. According to an unprecedentedly large cross-sectional study released last month by the Public Religion Research Institute, a majority of Americans (53 percent) now support same-sex marriage, compared to the less than one-third (32 percent) who supported it only 10 years ago.

The trend is expected to continue due to generational differences. Support for same-sex marriage among millenials (ages 18-33) is 69 percent, compared to 37 percent among the Silent Generation (ages 68 ...
