Packers will use Peppers at multiple positions

Mar. 25, 2014

ORLANDO, Fla. – Julius Peppers will play a key role in the Green Bay Packers’ revamped defense next season, according to coach Mike McCarthy.

Peppers will be used in what McCarthy calls an “elephant” defensive position, which could include outside linebacker, defensive end and tackle.

“Julius Peppers obviously is an excellent acquisition for our football team and just the thought and design of bringing Julius into our defense, he’ll be a multiple-position player,” McCarthy said Tuesday during a luncheon with reporters.

Peppers, a 6-6, 287-pound defensive end, was signed by the Packers earlier this month to a three-year, $26 million contract. It was an unusual move by the Packers, who typically shy away from older players like the 34-year-old Peppers in free agency.

But McCarthy spoke enthusiastically about Peppers’ ability to transform the Packers defense into an improved unit under coordinator Dom Capers.

Peppers spent four seasons with the Chicago Bears, so the Packers have seen him a lot. McCarthy has also worked with Peppers when he has coached in the Pro Bowl.

“We have a pretty good idea of what we think of him as a player and as a person,” said McCarthy.

“I’ve had a chance to be around him in a personal setting. I just feel he is an excellent fit for our program, our organization. And I know our football team will be excited that he is part of this team moving forward. Yes, we are very comfortable with everything as far as his evaluation.”
