Gypsy Vered Meltzer expects some uneasiness to surface over being elected as an openly transgender member of the Appleton city council. But he's determined to not let it become a distraction.

"I can see some push back, but I hope they'll get over it," Meltzer said Wednesday. "I hope things don't go that route. I don't want to lose focus on the issues and increasing communications between the city and its residents."

Meltzer, 31, identifies as a man and said his dreadlocks, 50-plus tattoos and gender identity are worth celebrating. But he said he's ready to serve his constituents. ...
