Sexual assault nurse examiners, or SANEs, are registered nurses who receive additional training to respond to victims of sexual assault. We are trained to use specialized equipment and techniques to provide treatment and collect evidence for law enforcement.

No matter how victims find us, our first goal is to evaluate and treat the patient's medical concerns. While it is also very important, evidence collection is secondary and begins only after victims agree to participate in a SANE exam.
