I used to stay up late listening to radio stations throughout the eastern half of the country when I was 50 years younger.

There was WBZ in Boston. WABC out of New York. CKLW, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. WLS and WCFL in Chicago. KMOX, Saint Louis. WWL, New Orleans. WOWO, Fort Wayne, Ind. WKBW, Buffalo, N.Y. KAAY, Little Rock, Ark. Those were just a few of the AM stations I used to tune to long after midnight.

They were all 50,000-watt, clear-channel stations. "Clear channel" meant they had little interference from other stations as they beamed signals to 30 or more states after the sun went down. ...
