Join the Fond du Lac Family YMCA for the second annual Agnesian HealthCare Color Burst 5K on Saturday, April 26, 2014. The second annual Color Burst event begins with a pre-race dance party warm-up beginning at 10:15 a.m. The 5K begins at 11 a.m. with waves leaving every minute. Everyone participating in the Color Burst begins wearing a white shirt that is provided and finishes full of color from running through the five color zones. After the finish, participants are encouraged to stick around for the finish line festivities and color toss grand finale.

The Y strives to strengthen our community with a focus on healthy living. More than half of the participants in the Color Burst last year were first-time 5K runners. "We hope that the Agnesian Color Burst 5K event can act as a catalyst for our participants to live an active, healthy lifestyle. The YMCA is excited to bring back the Color burst as a way to combine healthy choices with enjoyable experiences for the entire family," according to Greg Giles, Fond du Lac Family YMCA chief executive officer and executive director. "The Y believes that making healthy choices that are enjoyable are critical to a successful life journey," says Giles.

Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Some of the benefits include controlling your weight, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, strengthening your bones and muscles and improving your mental health and mood. Color Burst participants vary in demographics and reasons for running. With no winners or official times, the Color Burst caters to everyone -first time runners to seasoned athletes, both young and young at heart. Color Burst participants may run as a celebration of their healthy living accomplishments, while others participate for reasons unique to them. Groups of families, friends or training buddies participate in the event together, some dressed in festive, colorful clothing.

"Agnesian HealthCare is proud to return for a second year to support this fun event for the entire family," says Holly Brenner, Fond du Lac Family YMCA Board of Directors president and Agnesian HealthCare Vice President of Strategic Development. "We show our commitment to good health and overall wellness through our various Know & Go program initiatives, and the Color Burst 5K fits perfectly within those goals. We know this is a great event for both individuals and families alike, and we are proud to partner with the Fond du Lac Family YMCA."

Swain Family plans to participate again this year

Angie and Andy Swain, and their two children Conner, 11 and Lauren, 9, are looking forward to this year's Color Burst 5K.

Members of the Y, the Swains enjoy keeping active, in an effort to instill active values in their children.

"I want it to become part of their lifestyle," said Angie. "We are always looking for ways to keep them active, without them really realizing that they're 'exercising.'"

Angie said that seeing her children's enthusiasm during the race.

"They loved running to the next color station, and trying to guess what color it would be. We'd get close and they'd shout 'It's pink! I think it's pink!' And then they would roll through it," said Angie. She added that the volunteers were really encouraging, shouting to participants that they didn't just have to run through, they could roll, too.

"Even my husband rolled at one point," laughed Angie.

The Swain Family's favorite colors are purple for Angie, green for Andy, bright orange for Connor and bright pink for Lauren.
