Letters to the editor: Random act of kindness unexpected, appreciated

7:13 PM, Apr. 4, 2014  |  Comments

About a week ago on a Monday evening, I was completely taken aback by a most generous act of kindness. Here is how it unfolded:

As my friend and I were finishing our meal at Oshkosh's China King, an unknown lady approached our table and politely asked" "Are you veterans?"

Our surprised and tentative response was" "Yes we both are."?..and then went on the explain that my friend, Bernard Sullivan, was stationed on an American Air Force base in Okinawa for about two years, and I was on duty for almost four years in Germany, during and after the Berlin airlift.

After listening to brief details about our military background, the lady then politely said: "I want to thank you both for your military service, and as a token of my appreciation?.I have paid for both of your meals!"

Naturally we were both dumbfounded and at a complete loss for words, except perhaps to mumble: "Why, thank you?.thank you very much."

And then the lady was gone.

Our hope is that this lady will read this public Thank You, and that it might inspire others to extend similar acts of kindness to veterans of any type of military service.

Most veterans come home without any fanfare or warm welcome home.

This unknown lady's most kind and generous act of kindness proved to be the most emphatic welcome home that any veteran could have anticipated. Thanks again and may God bless.
