The Green Bay Packers have released running back Orwin Smith, according to the NFL transaction report.
Smith, 23, was signed to the practice squad on Nov. 13 after Michael Hill accepted an offer to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 53-man roster and spent the final two months of the season on the scout team.
A month after signing a three-year futures contract with Smith, the Packers brought back Hill on Feb. 26 after receiving his release from Tampa Bay. The re-signing of James Starks and John Kuhn only continued to clog up the team's suddenly deep backfield equation.
A 6-foot, 209-pound rookie out of Georgia Tech, Smith rushed for 1,839 yards and 20 touchdowns on 198 carries (9.3 avg.) over 51 collegiate games.
