Amazing things can happen when a community of like-minded individuals comes together, and this week, something truly outstanding is taking place across our area thanks to readers just like you.

On Sunday evening, I received a Facebook post regarding some unusual shrubs a reader had picked up and was excited to plant in her garden. However, when I saw the name of the plant, I was shocked. The reader had purchased a highly invasive shrub called Scotch Broom, a plant that is prohibited from sale or planting in Wisconsin. A large, national garden center chain was selling these plants, not only here in the Fox Valley, but across the state.

Thanks to this reader, I was able to quickly get photos of the plant, plant tag and other information to pass on to the proper authorities at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and the wheels were set into motion to clear this plant from garden center shelves.

“We are working with nursery inspectors and DNR conservation wardens to contact the stores and ensure that prohibited and restricted plants are no longer sold there,” said Kelly Kearns, invasive plant coordinator with the DNR. “We will again be notifying all the big box stores about the invasive plant regulations in Wisconsin.”

There are a number of plants regulated as “prohibited” or “restricted” invasive plants in Wisconsin. For the complete list, visit http://1.usa.gov/1hu6MUN.

Because of readers like you, the native plants of Wisconsin’s treasured landscapes are safe from at least one source of highly invasive shrubs. That’s my passion — and yours.
