The news that her former employer would be closing took her by surprise, but Stephanie Tlusty managed to land on her feet. And the business she's now running is just a few blocks from her home.

Tlusty had worked as a hair stylist at the salon at the Wausau JC Penney for nearly 19 years, but was forced to come up with a Plan B when the retailer announced in January that the Wausau location was one of the stores being closed as part of a turnaround effort.

Four months later, the 45-year-old Tlusty is managing her own salon at 607 Prospect Ave. ...
