Poor decisions, injuries and a death prompted authorities in the Midwest this week to issue warnings about the fad of jumping into frigid water.

Fueled by cellphone videos posted to social media websites, the "cold water challenges" and their variations have gained traction since mid-April, concerning public safety officials.

"Cold water and swift currents are a combination that can result in tragedy," said Scott Thiede, a conservation warden with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. ...
