The Green Bay Packers signed tryout defensive back Charles Clay to their 90-man roster on Monday, according to his agent, John Perez.

Clay (5-foot-11, 202) started six games last season at Hawaii at free safety but has also played cornerback.

The Packers listed Clay as a cornerback at their rookie orientation camp, which was held over the weekend. Clay was used at both cornerback and safety during practices on Friday and Saturday and is viewed as a core special teams player.

Clay was not invited to the NFL combine but posted a 4.42-second time in the 40-yard dash at his Pro Day, which was held on March 20 at San Diego State.

Clay grew up in Hawaii and was a preferred walk-on at Southern Methodist University, where he played wide receiver. He transferred to Hawaii, where he was switched to defensive back and played two seasons. He was originally a preferred walk-on at Hawaii but earned a scholarship his senior season.

With the signing of Clay, the Packers have one spot remaining on their 90-man roster. A total of 28 tryout players participated in the rookie orientation camp.
