Local athletes headed to Special Olympics National Games

After Nathanel Schmidt, 31, of Merrill wraps up competing in the Special Olympics Summer State Games in Stevens Point, he'll be trading one uniform for another.

Less than a week after closing ceremonies, Schmidt will switch from track and field, put on his bowling shoes and join more than 60 other Wisconsin athletes and coaches to head to New Jersey to compete in the Special Olympics USA games. He is one of 11 Region 2 athletes, coaches and a physician from central Wisconsin participating among an estimated 3,500 athletes at the national games.
