Robert Bauer laughs when he remembers being asked by Cindy Kiesling whether he expected his service in the Army National Guard would take him away from his job.

Bauer was interviewing for work with Kiesling in February 2001 with the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Labor Education and Training Center, and told her he didn't think there was anything that would take him away for a long period of time.

"I told her that maybe I'd have to go if there was something like a tornado. Seven months later, Sept. 11 happened," said Bauer, now a sergeant first class with the Guard's Bravo Battery 1-120th of Stevens Point. ...
