Food drive support appreciated

The results are in, and Door County mail carriers have proclaimed their recent food drive a great success.

Thanks to the concern our customers have for their less fortunate neighbors, we collected approximately 22,000 pounds of food to help stock the shelves at Door County Feed My People and Lakeshore CAP food pantries located in Sturgeon Buy, Holy Name of Mary Church pantry in Maplewood, The Koinonia Kupboard and Door of Life Food Pantry in Sister Buy, and The Washington Island Pantry.

The 22nd annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive was held in numerous cities and towns around the country on May 10, with all of the post offices in Door County participating. Sturgeon Bay mail carriers collected over 15,000 pounds of food. Mail carriers from Brussels, Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Ellison Bay, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Forestville, Sister Bay and Washington Island post offices collected an estimated additional 7,000 pounds.

It's a natural opportunity; since mail carriers visit each home six times a week, it's easy for us to collect food donations from caring customers. It really gives you a warm feeling to know you are helping someone, and the extra effort on this special day becomes a pleasure rather than a chore."

On behalf of the city and rural mail carriers, United States Postal Service, and local food banks, I'd like to thank the customers and numerous volunteers, throughout all of Door County for making the food drive such a great success. Special thank-you to Econo Foods for its generous donation to the food drive.

Here is a quote by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren that bears contemplating.

"We lose eight children and teenagers to gun violence every day. If a mysterious virus suddenly started killing eight of our children every day, America would mobilize teams of doctors, and public health officials. But not with gun violence."

My question is, how many children have to die before we do something?
