The Door County Environmental Council has scheduled a free seminar and documentary about sand mining in Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Crossroads at Big Creek, 2041 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay.

"The Price of Sand" is described as a chilling documentary about silica sand, small Wisconsin towns, and money that shocks everyone who sees how the frac sand mining boom has made rich people out of some and destroyed the communities at the same time.

New companies have arrived to take advantage of the resource, and land with accessible silica has been selling for triple-value high prices.

The program portrays the personal story of real people fighting for their towns, homes and health and the traditional way of life in places like Alma, Maiden Rock and Tunnel City. These mining operations extend over most of western Wisconsin and extend eastward as far as the Shawano County area.
