Chris and Ann Renard put the Renard cheese operations under single ownership after purchasing Renard's Cheese Store and factory in Clay Banks, north of Algoma. They also own Renard's Cheese & Deli in Nasewaupee, south of Sturgeon Bay.
The Renards bought out Chris' uncle, Brian Renard. The Renard cheese factory was founded in 1961 by Howard Renard, Chris Renard's grandfather. His father, Gary Renard also was a cheesemaker. Chris Renard is a master cheesemaker.
Each location will feature fresh cheese curds daily as well as handcrafted artisan cheese and Door County products. Both also offer free wine and cheese tasting. The Algoma store will offer homemade pizzas and other deli selections prepared fresh daily at the Sturgeon Bay store.
Also, the Renards are working to develop public tours of Door County's only cheese factory.
A nice video on the Renard history and on cheesemaking can be seen at www.renardscheese.com/about-us/our-history. The website, also allows online shopping.
Both Renard's stores have Facebook pages.
Pelkin's Smokey Meats
Dennis Pelkin opened a larger, state-of-the-art Pelkin's Smokey Meat Market in Crivitz at the end of May.
The market at 600 S. U.S. 141, has a sizable retail area for fresh meats, spices and other products, and also provides custom smoking and processing for wild game and domestic meats. The staff of 12 includes four butchers, including Pelkin.
Pelkin also owns the Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Coleman, which his father bought in 1973. They started processing wild game, including turkeys, deer and bear, in the 1980s and the business continued to grow.
"He'd do maybe four deer or so then. Last year we did over 1,200 deer," Pelkin said. "We'll process anything, wild or domestic."
The new building is 13,068 square feet, most of that devoted to processing.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays. The telephone number is (715) 854-3681.
Pelkin's Smokey Meat Market also has a Facebook page.
