Surprise! Packers activate RB Starks

In a somewhat surprising move, the Green Bay Packers activated rookie running back James Starks off the physically unable to perform list. To make room for him on the 53-man roster, the Packers released linebacker Robert Francois. The move is a surprise because Starks, a sixth-round draft pick out of the University of Buffalo, hasn't played football since the 2008 season, which was his junior year. He missed all of his senior season because of a shoulder injury. He then missed all of the preseason this past summer because of the hamstring injury he sustained in May. Starks began practicing three weeks ago but appeared to be limited to mostly individual drills and scout-team duties. Whether he's ready to actually play in game is unclear. The Packers' other options with Starks were to release him or place him on injured reserve. The Packers also released safety Michael Greco from the practice squad. That leaves a spot open if they want to bring Francois back if he clears waivers. In other news, cornerback Al Harris cleared waivers, meaning no teams claimed him. That makes him a free agent. -- Rob Demovsky, rdemovsk@greenbaypressgazette.com http://twitter.com/RobDemovsky
