The 49ers took the opening kickoff and drove 45 yards to set up Jeff Reed's 44-yard field goal with 11:49 remaining in the first quarter. Troy Smith connected with Michael Crabtree on a 39-yard pass to set up the score. The Packers responded by driving to the 49ers' 6, where they had a first and goal. But they botched the golden opportunity and came away with no points when Mason Crosby missed a 29-yard field goal that bounced off the left upright. The Packers' goal-to-go sequence went like this: First down: Aaron Rodgers overthrew an open Donald Driver in the end zone. Second down: Rodgers threw the ball away and was penalized 10 yards for intentional grounding. Third down: Rodgers completed a 5-yard pass to Greg Jennings. Rodgers was 8 of 11 for 52 yards. Troy Smith was 3 of 6 for 45 yards. Rookie James Starks made his Packers debut with two rushes for 5 yards.
