Jordy Nelson confirms he is emergency quarterback

Green Bay Packers quarterbacks like to live dangerously, it would seem. Aaron Rodgers chose not to slide on an 18-yard scramble yesterday against the Detroit Lions and suffered a concussion that knocked him out of the game. Then backup Matt Flynn, the only other quarterback on the team’s 53-man roster, also engaged in a risky maneuver when he dived head first for a first down in the third quarter. Flynn nearly collided with teammate John Kuhn on the play. Had Flynn been injured, who would have played quarterback for the Packers the rest of the game? Packers head coach Mike McCarthy earlier this season declined to publicly name his emergency No. 3 quarterback for competitive purposes. But wide receiver Jordy Nelson confirmed Sunday on Channel 2’s “Sunday Sports Night” that he would have been inserted at quarterback if Flynn went down. Nelson said there were wristbands ready to go on the sidelines that he would have worn to keep track of the plays. Nelson said he went up to Flynn after his scramble to make sure he was all right. Nelson was a second-team all-state selection as a quarterback at Riley County (Kansas) High School. At Kansas State, Nelson played wide receiver but threw two passes as a senior and both went for touchdowns. Rodgers’ status for Sunday’s game against New England remains uncertain, which means the Packers will likely activate QB Graham Harrell off the practice squad.
