Decision on Rodgers won't come until Saturday

Coach Mike McCarthy said at his press conference today that Aaron Rodgers, who suffered a concussion against the Detroit Lions, would likely not practice this week and a decision on his playing status against the New England Patriots wouldn't be made until Saturday. McCarthy said a decision on Rodgers' status won't be made based on the importance of the game, but rather on his quarterback's medical condition and best long-term interests. McCarthy said Rodgers is not doing any film preparation or attending meetings as of today. McCarthy said Rodgers seemed fine when he had a long talk with him on Tuesday. Rodgers' status will ultimately be determined by the recommendation of the team's medical staff, McCarthy said. He added that Rodgers has some hurdles to clear before he can be declared game-ready. The final decision won't come until Saturday, when the Packers are scheduled to fly to the East Coast for their game against the Patriots. McCarthy said Matt Flynn will have a heavy load this week in practice, but he is confident his backup QB will be well prepared and ready to go against the Patriots, if necessary. The Packers will likely elevate QB Graham Harrell from the practice squad, but that move might not be made until Saturday. The Packers will also do emergency quarterback work in practice, McCarthy said, which is no different than any other week. Although McCarthy didn't confirm it, receiver Jordy Nelson is the team's emergency QB. McCarthy said the Packers are following the NFL's formal protocol involving concussions. He said there's a "slim chance" Rodgers could practice Friday. Here is the Packers' practice participation report from today: Ryan Pickett limited; Josh Sitton limited; Anthony Smith full participation; Charles Woodson full; Frank Zombo did not participate (DNP); Rodgers DNP; Atari Bigby full; Chad Clifton limited; Daryn Colledge DNP; Korey Hall full; Cullen Jenkins out; Pat Lee limited; Clay Matthews limited.
