Saturday: I'm retiring after Pro Bowl

Jan. 25, 2013

Green Bay Packers Jeff Saturday didn’t need until after the Pro Bowl to decide he’s retiring after 14 NFL seasons.

Shortly after telling reporters in Hawaii he would wait until after Sunday’s game to decide on his future, the 37-year-old center told 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis on Friday he intends to retire after his sixth Pro Bowl appearance.

Saturday’s selection came as a slight surprise given he was benched after 14 starts in favor of Evan Dietrich-Smith and played only two snaps over the Packers’ final four games.

“We’ll finish it with sunsets in Hawaii and call it a much better career than I would have anticipated,” Saturday said on the show, via Pro Football Talk.

A former undrafted free agent, Saturday took a job as a manager at an electrical supply shop after college before being signed by Indianapolis where he spent the next 13 seasons before moving to Green Bay last offseason.

Saturday signed a two-year, $7.75 million deal with the Packers last offseason as a stopgap replacement for the departing Scott Wells and was unlikely to be back next season with a $1.35 million practice tag and another $2.4 million due in roster bonuses.

When asked last month about his sixth Pro Bowl selection, Saturday was realistic and foreshadowed his career nearing its end after 211 games (202 starts) and one Super Bowl championship with the Colts in 2006.

“I know this is the end of it for me, so you just appreciate that and you’re going to enjoy it,” Saturday said. “You remember all of them, but it’s a special time and I’m going to go enjoy it with the family.”
